APEC Tourism Working Group Youth Initiative

Working Group Meeting Quebec City, October 27 to 10, 1997

At this meeting in Quebec City, the APEC Tourism Working Group accepted a proposal to involve youth in the research and development of a website resource guide on cultural exchange and language learning opportunities in the Asia Pacific Region. Sixteen youth from APEC economies will work together to research and share information about language learning programs. This will give them the experience of working internationally using electronic communication technologies. At the 12th APEC Tourism Working Group meeting in Korea in May 1998, the final product will be presented.

The APEC Tourism Youth Network members will:

  • be connected with each other and with the Tourism Working Group by internet
  • create a list of language learning programs throughout the Asia Pacific that details programs available, cost, program highlights , age range and other pertinent information
  • present the end product to the Tourism Working Group in 1998

The APEC Tourism Working Group members will:

  • assist in identifying youth from the member economies to participate
  • help involved youth get access to technology
  • provide support and guidance
  • create awareness of the website in their own member economies

Goals of this Project:

  • to create a network of young people in the APEC region that will create a source book for language learning tourism in the Asia Pacific area
  • to study the short and long potential of language learning experience as tourism in the Asia Pacific region
  • to explore a new form of tourism that is of particular interest to youth

And this is the best part:

The APEC Tourism Language Learning Online Sourcebook will be linked to the APEC HRD Working Group Electronic Source Book on work, study and exchange opportunities in each member economy! This means that these two projects will feature one-stop shopping for young people looking to explore opportunities in the Asia-Pacific Region. The APEC Tourism Working Group also proposed that the youth sourcebook could linked to their own Tourism website as well.
