The Voice on the Radio, published by Delacorte Press, bears the same gripping, page turning suspense of Cooney's previous novels, the Face on the Milk Carton, andWhatever Happened to Janie? Cooney's style is intense; the emotions in the tale rub off on the reader. We too feel utter rage and loathing for Reeve for his shocking treachery to his allegedly beloved girlfriend. We're scandalized by his broadcasting the tale of her turmoil and kidnapping on a sleazy college radio show to gain popularity points; we feel Janie's horrified anguish when she finally uncovers the deception; we want Reeve to be punished for what he's done. Spine tingling and yet heartwarming, The Voice on the Radio hits a raw nerve in all who read the book, while simultaneously exploring the meaning of betrayal, the power of words, and the intensity of love.
