Canada Hosts APEC in 1997

In 1997, Canada is the host country for APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation), an organization of Asia-Pacific countries and economies whose goal it is to promote trade and investment. Throughout the year, Canada has hosted several "Ministerials", where the ministers of the 18 APEC member economies meet for several days to discuss issues of common interest.

The Canadian federal government proclaimed 1997 to be "Canada`s Year of Asia Pacific", and identified youth as a special target group for involvement in the year's activities. It specified that all Ministerial meetings hosted in Canada would incorporate a youth program.
