ASIAN AND WESTERN VALUES

Dr. Jan Walls will be speaking about the different priorities of Asians and Westerners. People from the West tend to look at their freedom as individuals, while Asians focus on the roles of individuals in the community. He is the director of the David Lam Center of International Communications at Simon Fraser University.

Yuen Pau Woo was born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore. He spent half of his life studying and working in Canada, Britain and the United States. Based on his experience he argues that Asians don't have a monopoly on Confucian values. He works at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in Vancouver.

Deepa Parekh will provide a contemporary view of balancing Western business ideas while retaining Asian cultural traditions. She is a photographer for Cosmopolitan India and has modelled for Phillips Disc Man and Killer Jeans while she was assisting Ashok Salian, an acclaimed fashion photographer in India.

Angie Mah (Calgary, AB) - is a first generation Chinese-Canadian who was raised in small town Alberta. Sharing her life's experience of growing up in a small, predominately white community, Angie's presentation will highlight Asian and Western values. Angie now works as Youth Program Coordinator for the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association, helping young women to cope with issues related to their cultural identity.
