Conference Report

Learning Projects

Due to the deadline to produce this edition of the report, only a few representative learning projects have been included. The remainder will appear in the subsequent edition.
Project 1

Objective:
To offer high school students in grade 8 the chance to represent an Asian country, debate a resolution and study the country’s values, customs and opinions on the issue debated.

Activity:
Students would first (in groups of 4) choose an Asian country and research its cultures and customs for a ®parade of nations® . This research would be done for a whole week. The parade is planned at the end of this week, Saturday night. This week can be named in the school. The students would dress in the country’s traditionnal dress, make the country’s food, listen to the country’s music, etc. A display would be set up for the parade of nations with pictures and others objects representing the country. Each group would make a two minutes speech on a resolution based on the country’s values during the debate portion. The students would learn about their country as well as the other countries represented.

Project 2

Objective:
To increase understanding of other cultures.

Activity:
Undertake field trips to cultural centers. At these locations, we should learn more about the culture, food, history, art, and take part in hands-on activities. Free time to explore should be included because it's important to experience and learn about other cultures on one's own.

Project 3

Objective:
To teach students more on the subject of Asian culture by presenting information on the subject of Asian culture.

Instructions:
Create an imaginative presentation on one aspect of Asian culture.

Project 4

Objective:
To learn about each other

Activity:
Pair regular students with English-as-a-Second Language students. Each would be responsible for completing a personal profile on their partner. This activity would increase understanding and interaction between "new" Canadians and those who have lived here for a long time.

Project 5

Objective:
To understand yourself

Activity:
Students write journals and essays reflecting their experiences living in Canada and the challenges that face those who have a different culture, which could affect their choices and lifestyles.

Project 6

Objective:
To acquire a more profound understanding of an Asian country so that they are prepared should they travel in Asia.

Activity:
Students choose an Asian country and immerse themselves in the society for one week (theoretically speaking). This means they must plan their travel route, understand the weather, decide what they will pack, determine how much money they will need, find out what vaccinations are required. They will need to get information on transportation, visas, passports and airlines. All information must be presented as a day by day travel plan.

Discussion questions:
What is the hardest part of travel is Asia? What new element of our country did your learn? In reality would you visit Asia? What area interested you the most in your studies? Would you study in greater depth in school if you were given the opportunity?
