SCHOOL ACTIVISTS... Taking environmental actions

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:01PM EST (-0500 GMT)
What kinds of stuff are you guys doing in your schools... related to the
environment I mean?

Centennial webmaster: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We operate a salmon hatchery at Centennial.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:03PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We've got two connections here. We are studying environmental issues in
our OAC "World Issues" class, studied the theories, and are hoping for a
good session today.

Auburn High: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:04PM EST (-0500 GMT)
At our school we recycle and we do periodic cleanups. We are also trying to
begin a composting program. Tomorrow we are travelling to Amsterdam for the
World youth caretakers of the environment conference.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:05PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Amsterdam!? Wow... so far the best we've done is drink real well water. :)

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:11PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Hey there! Environment problems aren't always global. I live in a small town
and we are having major problems with our sewage lagoons. An environmental
study was done, but it was disgustingly biased! The committee left out so
many factors. We are still fighting so that the unenvironmental solution
won't be passed. Any comments?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:19PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bravo on the lagoons action. Not many people know that raw sewage is the
biggest cause of water pollution.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:10PM EST (-0500 GMT)
At our school we have a group called the "Green Team". They attend
to recycling. The "Beyonders" are an outdoors group which overseas outdoor
clean up and general fun. Hi Denise from Tao and Richard remember us from
SAGE (Students Acting for Global Equality).

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:14PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We've been studying some of the issues regarding the 416 construction.. the
depression it rests in is below the level of the local pond (which Bell HS
uses for canoeing and outdoor Ed.) and engineers had to create new ways to
solve drainage problems (like building a cement plant right in the
construction!) So, while we're not doing anything as exotic as a missions
conference, we have been busy with these studies.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:13PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Here at West Humber Collegiate Institute we are named the first environmental school of Canada. We havecourses focused on environmental issues. Once a year schools excused for half a day to clean up the river valley beside us. We also have recycling boxes in every class room and they are cleared every week.

Auburn High: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:14PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI: How many students are enrolled in your environment-related course(s)
at your school?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Auburn, at WHCI in every course it is mandatory that there be a environmental
component.Whether it is a ISU or a short essay. We have an Environmental
Science course and a Geography course focused on current issues and
ills.We also have a club named the Global Action Team, who look at both
social and green environment.

Bell High School 2: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:16PM EST (-0500 GMT)
There are about 35 students in this semester's World Issues class. We focus
on worldwide issues; our current unit is environmental impact.

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:17PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Here at Bell High we also have an environment club. It consists of 1 teacher
and about 8 students. We had a Pitch-in Day to clean up the area.
Unfortunately, it poured! Oh well. Our club also has put in a full blue box
system.

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:20PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG at Notre Dame is also an environmental club - it stands for The World
Issues Group. It also came out of World Issues Geography last year. We only
have 11 people, so it's a challenge to get our whole school motivated (1800
people).

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:22PM EST (-0500 GMT)
S.A.G.E. has dealt with equity issues over the last four years but we would
to be more involved with environmental concerns and solutions.
Enthusiastic for ideas. I really hope they do not clear cut that old pine
growth near Ottawa If there is anyone that knows anything about this tell
the chat group.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:25PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We have a program going on at our school called "Spruce up Spruce Glen". We
had a severe storm last year that tore down some of our trees. Now we are
trying to make our school look nicer and to make more habitats for
animals.

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Do you people have an environmental club?

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:29PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Where are you from, do you have an environmental group, what are you doing?

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:30PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We are only a small group. What we are aiming for is to try and clean up
the lake for people can enjoy the lake as they used to. We want the wild
life, like ducks to be able to live there again.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:33PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: Our class is a sort of environmental club. We consider ourselves as
one. Anyone: we area group of grade 7/8 students.

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:34PM EST (-0500 GMT)
BHS 1,2,3: So what have you people been doing?

: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:35PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG this is West Park. We have been limited to what are enviro club can do
for our area because of work-to-rule!!

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park: Well, our school had work-to-rule last year. We sympathize with
you people. We had the exact same problem. All of our clubs and activities
were cancelled and/or delayed.

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:35PM EST (-0500 GMT)
tgmag: We have a club at Auburn High we are located in Nova Scotia.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:36PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We've mentioned the various clubs and activities our school has done (the
bog, the conservation centre, the enviro-club and blue box stuff) as
well as monitoring the 416 construction just outside. Our World Issues
class considers much of the theory involved.

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:38PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Your programs on education on the environment sound really interesting (at
Bell High)

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:39PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We make announcements, special fundraisers, pitch-in days (even though it
poured that day), etc.

West Park: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG...what grades are you?? what environmental classes does your school
offer? West Park only has geography classes. Grade 11 deals with the
environment and natural disasters.

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:47PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park: There are 11 students in TWIG, but there are only two of us
here.

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:43PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Twig stands for The World Issues Group -- out of OAC geography last year,
but has now all level of students West Park: Work to rule is frustrating..
a couple of years ago we had the same situation: How we motivate other: It's
Hard, we've done announcements (some crazy ones i.e Star Trek...)tons of
posters (we reuse the paper) , we've organized petitions, did 30-hour
Famine, Helped with FREE CORKY campaign, expanded recycling at our school.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We have an extensive blue-box program that encourages student participation
as well. So far it's mostly limited to students and local community.

Cawthra: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Hi. We're Cawthra Park SS from Mississauga, Ontario. Why doesn't the Canadian
Government put more restrictions on environmental pollution?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
tgmag@tgmag.ca, at WHCI (West Humber Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke) our
school spirit is dead but we are trying very hard to spark it up. We have
contests and games and last week it was spirit week getting students
involved with different clubs around the school. Some students are working
on the development of two CD-Roms and a curriculum involving the Healthy
House unplugged. We hold focus groups and we have worked with the artist to
develop the animation for an interactive game. Might I add this is ONLY one
student in grade 12, and one teacher talking right now.

Emery C.I.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We started a "Green Club" last year, but not much happened this year...we
need your ideas about how to keep interest in the environment alive.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Get the students interested in environmental issues. That's the first bit.
Some of it can be voluntary (like pitch-in days) and others like the trip
to the bog are built-into the curriculums. Once students are interested,
enviro-clubs and such can be put together and it should all go on from
there! :)

West Park: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell high school 3 this is West Park. How did your school get back on track
towards environmental issues? Did you loose school spirit? if so then how
did you get it back??

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:47PM EST (-0500 GMT)
The idea about walking was excellent. Walk-a-thons are popular right
now. It would be exciting to organize a Canada wide telephone game
where youth walk to meeting places, to share ideas raise money and tackle
problems in the local area.

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:47PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Mc Duck: Do you have an enviro-club? How many members if so?

McDuck: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:47PM EST (-0500 GMT)
:(

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:50PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park: Fortunately, Bell High has an awesome Principal and
Vice-Principal. They have always supported our school in everything we do.
Our school has bounced back from a very bad reputation since they came here.
But, they are both retiring this year!! We are very sad to see them go. :(
Thanks to them, Bell High is full of spirit and we do a ton of charity work
and other activities.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
It is very difficult to keep track of all these good comments. TG Mag are
you documenting this? Is CBC involved in any capacity?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:55PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Banting: Yes we are going to save the chat when it's finished, organize it
and put highlights up on the web page so that we can build on the ideas
shared here and share them with others.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:56PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We plan to keep a transcript of this chat session too.. it'll be interesting
to see.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
To everyone, are there any other tools that your schools need to help
sustain your environmental activism?

Emery C.I.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:54PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Thanks for the info TWIG - it sounds like an exciting project.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:55PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Hello why didn't any one respond to my lovely message we are beginning to
feel unwanted here. Please respond we are running out of time.
Approximately two years ago we had a Environmental Bill of Rights
launched from our school. Premier Bob Rae visited our school and gave a
speech concerning the topic.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:57PM EST (-0500 GMT)
The purpose of this session is to create advocacy. Is there going to be a
follow-up? We need concrete info>PLEASE!!!!

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:58PM EST (-0500 GMT)
The idea is that you guys can use this as an opprtunity to learn from each other... what are the things that are working in your schools? Hoaw are you doing them? What tools do you need? How can you help each other find or create them. RM:PE is also about information and advocacy. Use it.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:59PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Spruce: your school sounds like a lot of fun. ;)

Bell High School 2: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:59PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Hey there all! I'm from the environmental club here at bell! how is everyone
today?:)

Centennial Fishmaster: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:05PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHIC/NN ... ABOUT FEELING UNWANTED ...we just do not have the skill to keep up to date on the chat. How did your Bill of Rights end up? What did the
loss of the NDP Govt. effect it? We made sure that an enviro. friendly govt.
stayed in power.

Cawthra: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:11PM EST (-0500 GMT)
My grade ten geography class has completed a number of ISU's about the
environment and we want to chat

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:11PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Humber: Sorry neighbours! What have you guys been up to? Our group is
only 1 year old, so though we are known in school, we are small and not
completely established. We need to get idea on how to attract people.

Barb: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:18PM EST (-0500 GMT)
I have to get back to work..so long everyone. It's been nice chatting..Bye

West Park: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:19PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park has to sign off soon...we look forward to chatting again real
soon.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:22PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell High 1 and 3 are signing off... the World Issues class wants us back.
Great talking, guys... see ya!

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:22PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell High has been requested to go back to class. It's been a pleasure
folks. (This is the intelligent question QUEEN, signing off.) Bruins rule.

Generation2000: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:24PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Generation 2000 is outta here... if we can help anyone with starting up new projects

Bell High School 3: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:25PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Our super amazing librarian Mrs. M. Barnabe wishes to relay that it's been
an honour to participate in this chat.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:25PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Goodbye Auburn! Thanks for participating! Much appreciated!

West Park: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park is now signing off that's all folks!!!!!!!!!

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: Really great ideas guys! We would really like an article from you guys
and everyone else about your environmental action.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:27PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Goodbye, West Park! Thanks for joining us!

Centennial salmon: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:27PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We will have to close now .. We have a large Coho salmon smolt release this
afternoon. It will take us a while to count fish and get ready. Thanks to
all those who responded/helped/chatted.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:28PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Centennial Salmon: Happy swimming! We're jealous. Wish we could be counting
fish with Ya! Keep up the awesome WORK!!!

I've now moved to Bell one people:)

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:33PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TO ALL: What do your schools do as fundraisers?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:36PM EST (-0500 GMT)
For fundraisers we usually have candy grams or balloon gram or carnations for
a dollar. We have 3 point and slam dunk basketball shoot outs. Our school
is basketball crazy.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:45PM EST (-0500 GMT)
This entire session has been wonderful. As we said, we plan to organize the
discussion and put them on the RM:PE part of the website for people to get
access. Thanks a lot.

Centennial salmon: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:46PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell High I am off...on salmonenchanted evening. I have a gill friend and
have to meet her at her school.

Centennial Salmon: This is to bad cause I will not be on again or if I am it
will not be for a while..I am happy we had a chance to talk though:(

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:48PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Centennial, happy fishing. By the way, your school's program is very
awesome. We have some videos and pamphlets on your program so we'll be
adding it to our site. Keep in touch.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:49PM EST (-0500 GMT)
It seems as though everyone is leaving me does this mean I have to leave
