MOTIVATION and RECOMMENDATIONS

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:37PM EST (-0500 GMT)
To all the schools: You guys are environmentally active, but how do you get
others involved?

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Centennial: How do you get the community so involved? We have that problem
with plans. People are interested but they always have an excuse.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:41PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Spruce: It's great to see the young people working on this great issue at
your school. I hope you bring that spirit to high school.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:43PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell/Centennial: How do we get other schools to duplicate your successes?

Centennial salmon: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:43PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We offer tours to Elementry Schools, give slide presentations to the
community, go to all the environmental fairs and set up displays, as well as
travel around and get our hatchery known in the Lower Mainland of BC.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
tgmag@tgmag.ca, at WHCI (West Humber Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke)are
school spirit is dead but we are trying very hard to spark it up. We have
contests and games and last week it was spirit week getting students
involved with different clubs around the school. Some students are working
on the development of two CD-Roms and a curriculum involving the Healthy
House unplugged. We hold focus groups and we have worked with the artist to
develop the animation for an interactive game. Might I add this is ONLY one
student in grade 12, and one teacher talking right now.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:44PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Get the students interested in environmental issues. That's the first bit.
Some of it can be voluntary (like pitch-in days) and others like the trip
to the bog are built-into the curriculums. Once students are interested,
enviro-clubs and such can be put together and it should all go on from
there! :)

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:45PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Centennial: Because of your tours, do you think younger kids are more
responsive?

Centennial salmon: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:46PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We live about 30km out of Vancouver so development isn't that great but it
is growing.

Generation2000: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:49PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Rescue Mission Planet Earth will only be a good tool if you use it! It is
being sent to every school in Canada, so make a point to look for it! Its a
very cool book.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
It is very difficult to keep track of all these good comments. TG Mag are
you documenting this? Is CBC involved in any capacity?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
To everyone, are there any other tools that your schools need to help
sustain your environmental activism?

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:54PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: well, I'm sure fish dissection kits and programs to involve other
schools would be cool. :) Does the book contain resources for practical
applications a school can involve itself in?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:55PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Banting: Yes we are going to save the chat when it's finished, organize it
and put highlights up on the web page so that we can build on the ideas
shared here and share them with others.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:56PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We plan to keep a transcript of this chat session too.. it'll be interesting
to see.

Emery C.I.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:56PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Magazine - we'd love to know more about your magazine - do you still have
some back issues that we can use a resource in our work?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Re: TG Magazine: It's on-line weekly. We are looking for environmental
articles and anything else that interests you. We accept both French and
English articles. SEND US SOME!! e-mail us at tgmag@tgmag.ca

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:57PM EST (-0500 GMT)
After hearing that there is actually curriculum taught about the environment
I am jealous. I think if our school had courses like others we would have a
greater knowledge of the condition our world is in. This is the tool our
school needs.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:57PM EST (-0500 GMT)
What about co-op programs with environmental organizations? (an idea)

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 1:57PM EST (-0500 GMT)
The purpose of this session is to create advocacy. Is there going to be a
follow-up? We need concrete info>PLEASE!!!!

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:00PM EST (-0500 GMT)
What we'd like to do is also plan a series of chats for next year to keep the discussion and action going. Anyone interested?

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:01PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We'd be happy to participate in chats in the future.. this is quite an
experience.

Banting Memorial H.S.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:01PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Could we at Banting have a copy of the transcript. Bye Denise from Liz, Tao,
and Richard (SAGE) Save the world. Be green.

West Park: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Park is definitely interested in further chats throughout the year.
tell us more about these chats.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We're glad you are enjoting the chat. What else can we do to increase environmental activism?

Barb: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Any chance of having a guess speaker...say David Suzuki's daughter who was
one of the original people to go to the Rio Summit?

Cawthra: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:03PM EST (-0500 GMT)
We would be interested in Bell's information with regard to the action guide.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:05PM EST (-0500 GMT)
To everyone: e-mail us and tell us about your environmental activities so we
can add them to our RM:PE web page.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:06PM EST (-0500 GMT)
West Humber: We are interested in bringing together a group of students and
teachers to write curriculum in August. Are you interested?

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:07PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell 1: Our school is a lot of fun and all of us (even though we may not know
it) really enjoy being here! TWIG: My grandfather was an organic farmer.
That means that he wouldn't use any pesticides at all. It didn't cost him
as much and his produce was the first to go at market.Auburn: Ask us about
something and we will talk to you about it! TG Magazine: We would be
very interested if there were more chats conducted next year. They run very
smoothly!!

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:14PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: we would would be interested any ideas or suggestions you have or if
you want our opinion concerning anything. You may contact Ms. Kaus at 416
394-7356.Centennial: We have a computer set up with the government where
people can ask questions about the bill of rights.there are several of
these set up in libraries throughout Ontario.

Emery C.I.: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:07PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Thanks TG Mag for organising this web chat - my students. - who have had to
go to class - enjoyed the ideas and the use of Internet.

Bell High School 2: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:08PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Barb, our "invironmental" club got a letter from David Suzuki about our club
and what we do.

Barb: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:09PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell 2: Ya, he's a cool guy. Hhe's a big supporter of Generation 2000 who is
also here chatting.

Bell High School 2: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:11PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Barb, he asked us all about what we thought about a few things and his
beliefs, it was interesting! anyhow where are you located?

Cawthra: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:13PM EST (-0500 GMT)
There are over 26 experts on Canadian issues here, does anyone have any
comments?

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:13PM EST (-0500 GMT)
I'd like to know how a student can go about getting his book published...

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:17PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: There's a book called "The Canadian Writer's Market" that will tell
you!

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:18PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag, sounds good, thanks. Students here have written a book about web
authoring and HTML, and we've been pushing Schoolnet to help us... but
they've not been doing much yet.

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:16PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Does anybody know what GREENPEACE is or has done lately?

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:17PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Yes TWIG, us here at Auburn want to know about GREENPEACE too. Can anyone
help us?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:18PM EST (-0500 GMT)
During one of our Youth week chats, a rep. from Greenpeace was here to talk
about the environment.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:21PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Greenpeace headquarters is based in Toronto at (416) 597-8408.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:18PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG: at our school we have a point system set up. Every club or team a
student participates in goes to earning rewards at the end of the school
year. That is just a suggestion to encourage school spirit. It also
recognizes students for their efforts.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:19PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Point system! snap fingers that's a great idea!

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:19PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Auburn: Just some reminders, mostly when we are doing campaigns ... info on
i..e Temagami, animal rights. Actually, once we were brainstorming at a
meeting and decided to do a Star Trek based one, and many of us couldn't
keep a straight face when we said it. But this made us realize that in
order to get attention to the really important stuff we believe in, it's
good sometimes to do some crazy, weird stuff. People remember it more, and
that is the goal.. to make people aware.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:20PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG: Yes. Make it fun, and it will last. :)

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:20PM EST (-0500 GMT)
There is a really good book on the environment. It's a photo book called ONE
EARTH, Has anyone seen it?

Bell High School 2: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:20PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: I think your youth week chats are an awesome idea!

TWIG at Notre Dame: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:22PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Everyone about point system: BIG MISTAKE!!! Don't use it for too long...
here at ND 5 years ago we started a point system and "house colours" for
school spirit... no one cares now...

Auburn Drive High School: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:22PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Way to go TWIG. We think like you. It's good to be crazy every now and then.
Well so long for now . We'll see you soon maybe. Bye everyone.....:)

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:23PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG: The goal is to make people aware. SPRUCE: CKVR (Tony) is
really interested in following up and doing a story on you and RM:PE. And all
you other guys might think about contacting your local media and helping
push others using RM:PE!

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: Really great ideas guys! We would really like an article from you guys
and everyone else about your environmental action.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:26PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TWIG: sorry I took so long to respond to you, i took a washroom break, our
point system has been running for years and we have many recipients which
proves there is a lot of participation.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:31PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHIC: Can you tell us a bit more about your curriculum and your CD-Rom?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:33PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Our curriculum is a 700 page book suggesting ideas for teachers to
incorporate the environment into each course.and it is WHCI NOT whic!!

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:33PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TO ALL: What do your schools do as fundraisers?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:36PM EST (-0500 GMT)
For fundraisers we usually have candy grams or balloon gram or carnations for
a dollar. We have 3 point and slam dunk basketball shoot outs. Our school
is basketball crazy.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:37PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI/NN: That is a great idea!

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:38PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: How would I go about writing to you about it?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:39PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: We have writer's guidelines on the net. Check www.tgmag.ca/wpetg.html
or call us at (416) 597-8297. We'd love photos too.

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:40PM EST (-0500 GMT)
The curriculum is published so any school that has received has an
opportunity to use any ideas suggested.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:41PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI: How can we get a copy?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:43PM EST (-0500 GMT)
To get a copy contact WHCI at 416 394-7570.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:42PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: I will start writing you that letter tonight..it might be a while
cause the school is just starting exams...But I will get you pictures and
send you them. I will call for your address and then they will be off:)

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:45PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: When I call for your address who might I ask for?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:46PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell, you can ask for Denise or Stoney when you call. Look forward to
talking to you.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:49PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag I will be giving your office a call with in the next few days. My name
is Hill and I will be talking to you soon:)

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:50PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI: This has been one heck of a learning experience. It's hard to keep
onto of all the things people want to talk about. But wee will be doing this
again. Any suggestions on how we can make this chat more focused? We will
invite all the participating schools to send suggestions.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:50PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Does anyone have a private chat room that they know of that we could go
to instead of going through all of these messages?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:52PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Life does not end after high school. Cheer up. You can chat to us from
College or University... or a library. Keep in touch.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:52PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Magazine: before I am off to go home for the day:) do you have office hrs I
could have so I know when not to call or when to call?

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
ANYONE?ANYONE?ANYONE? DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY PRIVATE ROOMS IN ANY OF THE OTHER PROGRAMS WHERE YOU CAN TALK TO JUST ONE OR TWO PEOPLE IF IT GETS TOO
CROWDED?

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Spruce, we have an idea. (light bulb!) We will approach ENO (educators
network of Ontario ) or TVO to see if they can set up a conference for us.
Would that work for you?

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:53PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: next time I suggest that their be different chat rooms for different
topics. This way people don't feel lonely. Topics can be discussed in
detail, instead of a lot of jumping back forth through topics.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:54PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bell: we are here at the office from 8:30 am until 5pm usually. Try between
then.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:54PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI/NN: I think that is a awesome idea!

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:55PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Sorry spruce I do no know of any chat lines, this is the first that I have
participated in.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:56PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TG Mag: I will and I will be in touch very shortly. I can not wait to talk to
you so you can see your school and what it looks like:)

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:56PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI/Spruce/Bell: CBC donated this space for us to experiment. We are
learning too. Private conferences do have costs, but we have been
investigating a way of doing it. The cost is about 100$ per year, per
school. Do you think that would be viable option so w we could have unlimited
topics and focussed discissions.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:57PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TGMAG: THE REST OF THE CLASS IS DOING SOMETHING ELSE. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY
TALK TO MRS. HAWKINS ABOUT THAT. I AM SURE THAT THE TEACHER (MRS.HAWKINS)
WOULD BE INTERESTED. IF YOU CAN'T GET A HOLD OF HER E-MAIL THE SCHOOL AT spruceps@muskoka.com WE WOULD ENJOY HEARING FROM YOU!! :-)

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 2:58PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Sorry computer people it is time for me to leave now school ends in a few
minutes. TG Mag, thank you for inviting us do not forget us next time. It
has been a pleasure and informative discussion. Later, NN.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:00PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TGMAG: I THINK THAT THAT WOULD BE A VERY REAL POSSIBILITY IN THE FUTURE FOR OUR SCHOOL.WE WOULD HAVE TO ASK THE MUSKOKA BOARD OF EDUCATION THOUGH. WE MIGHT GET CRAMPED WITH PEOPLE WANTING TO GO ON.

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:00PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Bye, bye. We must be going here too. But again. Thanks. This was
wonderful... and you guys did a great job. Check out the website and send us
feedback. Find the RM:PE book when it comes to your school.

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:00PM EST (-0500 GMT)
WHCI: It was fun:)

WHCI/NN: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:00PM EST (-0500 GMT)
tgmag: may be you should charge a user fee.later (again)

Bell High School 1: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:01PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Take care all:)

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:01PM EST (-0500 GMT)
TGMAG: WE COULD GET ACCESS TO A CHAT PROGRAM ON THE INTERNET AND MEET THERE EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE!

tgmag@tgmag.ca: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:02PM EST (-0500 GMT)
Spruce: make sure you follow up with CKVR. The contact there is Tony Panacci
at 734-3300. Let us know how it goes.

Spruce: . . . . Wed, Jun 5, 3:03PM EST (-0500 GMT)
BYE BYE NOW!!! :-) :0 :-@ ;-) SEE YOU LATER. IT WAS LOTS OF FUN
