As some of you know I usually don't watch much TV...but there's some cool stuff on Oprah sometimes and my Mom was watching it as I walked through the room and noticed that they were talking about a guy who runs an organization in New York for homeless people It was a great little interview with the guy and video segment of what the organization does. They take in homeless people off the street and give them a job starting at $5/hr and working up and help to get the people off on a better start....they charge the people:

  • $50/month rent;
  • $15/month food and;
  • $30/month put into savings for the person for later...when the savings fund reaches $1000...the org. puts another $1000 into the account...this money goes to helping the people to start off on their own.

To date the organization has had about 750 people graduate from it. The food they were serving looked totally good too! And the rooms were very nice!

The guy was talking about how there is so much more to poverty than what people commonly think...then a guy who had been saved by the program came on and read a letter he had written to thank the man who started the organization. It was a touching letter...my eyes were watering and my dad who was watching it too, was crying afterwards...I don't think my dad totally understood why the poverty stuff was important to me or what could be done to help poor people! Sometimes it takes something like the interview on opera to get someone to understand.

Interesting organization, I was totally impressed and want to find out some more information about things like: where the organization gets some of its funding etc...
