Breakfast with Minister Marchi
By Jean Dumas, Youth Journalist
Toronto, June 10 1997 -- This morning, the young delegates from the Youth Forum had an informal breakfast with Minister Marchi. This encounter allowed them to adress the Minister personnally before presenting their group recommendations later this afternoon.
Bryce Hartnell from Halifax, Canada asked the Minister how the Action 21 Program foresees supporting the work of youth after having its community programming budget significantly reduced. The Minister responded that many new initiatives will be put in place to meet this need. He mentions for example the creation of a program called the Northern Star Award that recognizes the involvment of youth.
Megan Martin of Swift Current, Saskatoon, Canada asked the Minisiter to explain how APEC would deal with the problem of the greenhouse effect knowing that Canada did not achieve its previous objectives. The Minister replied that the greenhouse effect is a complex problem and, that in the future, all the sectors will have to consult each other more effectively.
This encounter ended with the presentation of a certificate of recognition to the Minister for his encouragement and support of The Students Commission. The Minister, clearly touched by this gesture, reminded us that he firmly believes that youth have a vital role to play in the decision making process for sustainable development and he promised that he will persist in his efforts to promote the voice of youth.
