The conclusion of this conference corresponds to that of a successful first experience for the Students Commission. During the conference the Commission initiated a research program with the Center of Excellence by conducting it on location for the first time. Many aspects have been studied in this research but the report only expresses the points of view of the young people that have actually conducted the research. You will find a section called « Research 101 for youth by youth » that explains all the steps that our research group has gone through.
The young delegates collaborated very efficiently when it came to data collection. Many research techniques have been used by our youth research team in order to make good observations such as: taking notes during group activities, taking notes on the conference atmosphere, conducting interviews with video cameras, taking memorable pictures etc.
In conclusion, the Students Commission did "on location" research for the first time which proved to be a very enriching experience for the youth research team. This data will allow the improvement of future events like these and improve the lifestyle of young Canadians.
"Research 101 for
youth by youth"
You might think that it is difficult to conduct research. If so,
we had some advice for you. This advice is quite simple, it will
allow you to carry out small research projects and describe the
events you organize in your area.
1, 2, 3, Ready?
- A good pen (you can use different colors to organize your
notes).
- A notebook.
- A small tape recorder to conduct interviews (a basic model will
do).
- A camera to take pictures (a disposable one will do).
- A bag for your things (it's easier to go around with).
Set!
- Observe the room (its shape, size, lighting, color and the way
people are seated etc.).
- You must look for the events that have a certain impact on you.
- A group discussion, comments that matter to you, different opinions
among the group etc.
- Ask the participants what their impressions are at the beginning,
in the middle and at the end of the event.
- Try to create a relaxed atmosphere before each interview in order
for the outcome to be as authentic as possible.
Go!
- The research will allow you to describe the events and witness
the progression of your project in the long run.
- If you must sell your project idea to someone, you will have a lot
of information and data to provide.
- If you must improve certain aspects of your project, you might want
to use the data.
