New Ditty "Sunday in Toronto" A Satire On City's Blue Laws!

Anonymous

For years, Montreal visitors to Toronto have razzed the local population about Toronto's famous blue laws which close up the city every Sunday. This week, Torontonians have the laughÉ on themselves!

The Ontario capital's Sunday restrictions have been immortalized in a satirical song called "Sunday in Toronto." Composer is Ozzie Williams, favourite Club Kingsway band-leader, Williams' inspiration for the ditty sprang from Toronto Alderman Lamport's recent arguments in favour of repealing the age-old Toronto blue laws, put before the City Council.

Said Mr. Lamport: "I think catchy words and music of the song is very well timed and certainly won't hurt Toronto. It will have a tendency to have those realize who are not more tolerant that there is some consideration needed by those who need some other recreation or interests." Although copies of the song were sent to all City Fathers, it still remains to be seen whether or not Mayor McCallum will be singing the "Sunday in Toronto"É along with other Torontonians.

Some samples of the song's eight verses:

Oh, nobody's happy Sunday In Toronto.

They have set that day aside for doin' right,

So we wink and off we go, spend the day in Buffalo,

And we won't be home till late on Sunday night.

Chorus:

Oh, Toronto, oh Toronto is O.K. in every way,

Every way and every day - except Sunday.

They don't have no sidewalks SUNDAY in TORONTO.

They just roll 'em up and put them out of sight.

But before they roll 'em in, I'll be leavin' town again,

And I won't be home till late on Sunday night.

They don't have no fun on SUNDAY IN TORONTO.

There's no dancing when the moon is shining bright.
