Phaedra Hitchings

Hi, my name is Phaedra Hitchings. I am twenty years old and have been a volunteer for most of my life. Well, not if you don't count things like: "I'll help carry that, Grandpa", or" I'll help you make cookies, Mom". Anyway, much of my volunteer work started in high school. I worked in the school library for six years doing all kinds of library things. I was trained in basic counselling and became a Peer Support Team member for two years.

Outside of school, I volunteered for a number of small things as well. Some of these were visiting residents of a retirement home and going for walks with them, helping to clean the grounds of the senior citizens' home, and helping at Taco Time for Little Hearts Day. I also volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross Society.

In the future I know I will continue to volunteer as much as I can. I like to help out and I love how volunteering can bring new challenges to every day. I also find working as a volunteer fun, the people are nice, the causes are good and most of the time the projects themselves are fun. Most importantly, it makes me feel good to make a positive difference without having to be paid to do it.
