APEC Trade Ministerial Meeting
May 9-10, 1997, MontrÈal, QuÈbec (Canada)

Brief Description

University students at undergraduate and post-graduate level from across Canada participated in an electronic conference to discuss trade and economic issues in the APEC region, including longer-term prospects for youth. A special Canadian "APEC Youth and Trade Team" was selected from the electronic conference to attend the Ministerial meeting and the concurrent APEC Customs Industry Exhibition.

The Team presented a report to the Canadian Minister for International Trade proposing several initiatives to involve youth in APEC such as a virtual Canada-Asia-Pacific Youth Council and educational exchange programs. The report, "Youth and the APEC Community," was adopted as an official APEC document, and circulated to all participating delegations of the Ministerial meeting.

Several member economies expressed an interest in involving youth in subsequent meetings of APEC Trade Ministers. This initiative is being organized with the assistance of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).
