Kugluktuk
In Kugluktuk, Nunavut, we began with inviting young people who wanted to take action on the issue of substance abuse in their community to various workshops and leadership training opportunities throughout Canada. This allowed youth from Kugluktuk to meet with youth from the other two Focus Three communities and with Students Commission staff. Youth developed skills, gained confidence and shared their expertise with other young people from across Canada. The young people were selected by adults who were mentoring them in their community. Our connections to the high school and the Kitikmeot Board of Education continued to grow as did our connection to the youth of the Grizzlies sports organization, a force for positive change in Kugluktuk. With the new relationships developed with Kugluktuk youth, Students Commission staff travelled to the community. This trip highlighted the impact that young people had had on the use of alcohol in their community. Young people had helped to create changes that improved life for children and youth in Kugluktuk. A series of new ideas were generated by these young people, with adult support, on what else they could be doing to help support their community.
