Youth Week

Youth Week July 14th to 17th

Every year, the Kainai Children’s Services hosts a youth week, in the week leading up to Indian Days (the annual celebration at the fairgrounds in Standoff.) The week of July 14-17 was the fifth annual Kainai Youth Week. Youth week is a chance for youth to do something positive during the week instead of getting into trouble with drugs and alcohol. The week was kicked off with the seventh annual Kainai Youth Walk-a-thon. This was a walk that is geared towards raising awareness about suicide, and promoting suicide prevention. The walk-a-thon was started by Myron Wolf Child. After his tragic death by suicide in 2007, we now walk in his memory. The walk is a 34 km walk from the Moses Lake Gym to the Standoff Human Resource Building. Tuesday was the preparation day. Wednesday was the Children’s Festival, including various games and activities. The favorite is always thesauri-jump and the dunk tank. This year the Astro-jump was a 70-foot obstacle course, which was a big hit with the kids. The dunk-tank was fun until it started to rain. The water was freezing but the kids had fun knocking me into the water. The last day was the tournament day, which is a chance for the young talent to show off their skills. This year the tourney was a hockey tournament.
